Correct use of ladders
Purpose
To provide safe practices for selecting, setting up, and using ladders in order to prevent falls, injuries, and equipment damage.
Scope
This SOP applies to all employees, contractors, and visitors who use ladders within company premises or for work-related activities.
Responsibilities
- Employees/Contractors: Use ladders safely and in accordance with this SOP.
- Supervisors/Managers: Ensure only trained personnel use ladders and inspect them regularly.
- Health & Safety Officers: Provide training, monitor compliance, and arrange maintenance or replacement of damaged ladders.
Procedure
A. Pre-Use Inspection
- Check ladder for cracks, bent rungs, loose parts, or other defects.
- Ensure feet, locking mechanisms, and hinges are in good condition.
- Do not use damaged ladders — tag and report immediately
B. Ladder Setup
- Select the right type and size of ladder for the task (step ladder, extension ladder, platform ladder).
2. Place ladder on a stable, level, non-slippery surface.
3. Ensure step ladders are fully opened with spreaders locked in place.
4. For extension ladders:
o Position at a 4:1 angle (1 foot out for every 4 feet up).
o Secure top and bottom to prevent slipping or movement.
5. Keep the area around the ladder clear of obstructions and trip hazards.
C. Safe Use
- Always face the ladder and maintain three points of contact (two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand).
2. Do not climb higher than the manufacturer’s recommended top step or rung.
3. Keep your body centered — avoid leaning or overreaching.
4. Carry tools in a belt or hoist them up; keep hands free when climbing.
5. Only one person is permitted on a ladder at a time.
6. Do not move or shift the ladder while standing on it.
7. Do not exceed the ladder’s weight capacity (including person + tools/materials).
D. Storage and Maintenance
- Store ladders in a dry, secure location away from direct sunlight, moisture, or chemicals.
2. Keep ladders free of oil, grease, or other slippery substances.
3. Inspect ladders regularly and record maintenance checks.
Emergency Procedures
• In case of a fall or injury:
- Provide first aid or call emergency services if required.
2. Report the incident to a supervisor immediately.
3. Do not reuse the ladder until it has been inspected and deemed safe.

- Only trained employees may use ladders.
- Training must cover ladder selection, setup, use, and inspection.
- Failure to follow ladder safety rules may result in disciplinary action.
