Keeping walkways clear
Purpose
To ensure all workplace walkways, corridors, aisles, and exits are kept free from obstructions and hazards, reducing the risk of slips, trips, falls, and delays during emergencies.
Scope
This SOP applies to all employees, contractors, and visitors within company premises.
Responsibilities
- Employees/Contractors: Keep walkways clear at all times and report hazards immediately.
- Supervisors/Managers: Monitor workplace areas to ensure compliance.
- Health & Safety Officers: Conduct regular inspections and provide training on walkway safety.
Procedure
A. General Rules
- Walkways, corridors, aisles, and emergency exits must remain clear and unobstructed at all times.
- Do not store boxes, bags, equipment, or materials in walkways.
- Keep personal items (bags, coats, etc.) in designated storage areas, not on the floor.
- Ensure electrical cords, hoses, or other equipment are routed away from walkways or covered with approved cable protectors.
- Spills, leaks, or wet floors must be cleaned immediately or marked with warning signage until safe.
B. Housekeeping Practices
- Dispose of waste and recyclables in bins, not in walkways.
- Return tools, carts, and office equipment to proper storage after use.
- Arrange furniture and equipment so that walkways remain accessible.
- Keep stairwells, fire exits, and evacuation routes 100% clear — never block these areas.
C. Reporting Hazards
- If an obstruction or hazard is found, remove it immediately if safe to do so.
- If removal is not possible, mark the area with signage or barriers and notify a supervisor.
- Report recurring issues (e.g., storage in walkways) to management for corrective action.
Emergency Situations
- During an evacuation, walkways must be free of obstacles to allow safe and quick movement.
- Do not stop or leave belongings in walkways during an emergency.
Inspection and Maintenance
- Supervisors and the Health & Safety Officer will conduct routine inspections of walkways.
- Any identified hazards (e.g., poor lighting, uneven flooring, clutter) must be corrected immediately.
Review
This policy and SOP will be reviewed every 12 months or sooner if equipment, regulations, or workplace risks change.
