Scissor lift
Purpose
To establish safe and effective procedures for operating the scissor lift and tilt platforms during routine use.
Scope
This SOP applies to all trained and authorized personnel who operate scissor lift/tilt equipment within the facility.
Responsibilities
- Operators must follow this SOP, complete pre-use inspections, and report any malfunctions.
- Supervisors must ensure only trained personnel operate the equipment.
Equipment Description
The scissor lift consists of:
- Reinforced deck plate (checker or smooth)
- Hydraulic system with a power pack (motor, pump, solenoids, reservoir, cylinders)
- Electrical control switch (typically 220V)
- Safety features: guardrails, toe boards, warning bells, safety chains, and optional hinged bridges
Operational Procedure
A. Pre-Operation Inspection
Before use, the operator must:
- Confirm all safety devices (guardrails, chains, toe guards) are in place and functional.
- Run one complete lift-lower cycle to check for proper operation.
- Inspect for visible damage, odd noises, or vibrations.
- Ensure the area around and underneath the lift is clear of obstructions and personnel.
- Clean up any oil or debris around the platform.
B. Starting the Lift
- Press the Start button on the control panel.
- Press the Up button to activate the motor and hydraulic pump.
- The platform will:
- Raise to the required height
- If equipped, tilt forward
- Hold momentarily
- Tilt back
- Return to the original position
- Releasing the button stops the lift and locks the platform in place using a check valve.
C. Lowering the Lift
- Press the Down button to engage the solenoid-operated lowering valve.
- The platform will descend as hydraulic oil returns to the reservoir.
- Releasing the Down button stops the descent.
Note: The platform can stop at any height by releasing the control button. Downward movement ends when hydraulic pressure is exhausted, or the base stops are reached.
D. Loading and Unloading
- Position the lift so loads move on/off from the rolling end of the scissor arms for best stability.
- Always center the load and ensure it does not exceed capacity limits (see nameplate).
- Secure mobile loads before operation.
- Use handrails and safety chains when working near open platform edges.
Post-Operation
- Lower the platform to its home position.
- Turn off the power supply.
- Inspect the unit for any wear or abnormalities.
- Report any issues to maintenance immediately.
Emergency Procedure
- Immediately press Stop or release the control button if any unusual operation is observed.
- Alert maintenance and follow lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures.
Operating Manual
- A detailed Operating Manual for the Scissor Lift is available and must be referenced by all operators. Familiarity with the manual’s instructions is a mandatory part of complying with this SOP.
